Geography Field Trip or Disaster Tourism?
Wednesday April 16, 2025 2:00pm - 2:50pm BST
Using the idea of Connected Geographies, we examine how we approach field trips in areas where natural disasters have occurred to ensure that this is done ethically and appropriately, and not simply ‘disaster tourism’. We will examine three locations used by British educational groups: Pompeii and the Vesuvius eruption AD79, Moroccan earthquake Sept 2023 and the ongoing eruptions around Grindavik in Iceland. How can we ensure that our visit has a positive and not negative impact.
